In December, David Alaba suffered a serious knee injury during Real Madrid’s victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 31-year-old was revealed to have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, which has ended his involvement this season – he also won’t play any part at Euro 2024.

Despite this, Alaba is set to be at the tournament in an official capacity, with Relevo reporting that Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick has requested the central defender to be part of his coaching staff.

Alaba is expected to accept the proposal, having been left feeling “delighted and grateful” at the opportunity presented to him by Rangnick. He will hope to inspire Austria out of the Euro 2024 group, which features France, Poland and the Netherlands, at the very least.

Alaba should be back in action for the start of Real Madrid’s season in 2024-25, although his regular place in the team is far from certain. Antonio Rudiger has been fantastic in his absence, and Eder Militao is likely to be a locked-in starter too.
