Top Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo will be out of the Norfolk Tides lineup for several weeks after crashing into the third base dugout at Lehigh Valley’s Coca Cola Park on Thursday and fracturing a rib.
Jackson Holliday recorded a pair of extra-base hits, and Coby Mayo left the game “as a precaution.” Jackson Holliday drove in the tying run with a double in the eighth, but Lehigh Valley struck for two more in the ninth.
Triple-A Norfolk third baseman Coby Mayo left the Tides’ game at Lehigh Valley after he collided with part of the third base dugout. Mayo went 2-for-2 before the collision in Norfolk’s 8-6 loss.
It’s tough to find an opening in the Orioles emerging offense, but there are two players in particular that could still find a full-time role. Life is good for the Baltimore Orioles.
Coby Mayo was a triple shy of the cycle as the Tides’ offense came alive again. The Tides were swinging the bats like it was early April all over again, pounding out a dozen runs on a whopping 19 hits.
Delmarva’s starter needed only nine pitches to strike out all three batters in the first inning, and Coby Mayo homered in a fourth consecutive game for Norfolk.
Standout performances were had up and down the Orioles’ farm system, including a dominating Double-A debut for Cameron Weston among others. Cade Povich tossed yet another gem as the Tides won their fifth straight game.
Left-hander Cade Povich allowed one run on five hits as Triple-A Norfolk beat Nashville, 7-3. The 24-year-old Povich (3-1) walked four and struck out five.
Norfolk won in extra innings and Aberdeen won a slugfest Starting pitcher Chayce McDermott (CC prospect #10) exited in the first inning. He struck out the first two batters he faced and then surrendered a double and walked the next three batters.
The Tides were back on top and Bencosme had a big day for Bowie as only Aberdeen lost last night. The Tides won their second straight and got back to their early season ways of scoring double digits.
Norfolk’s offense vanished except for Coby Mayo, Matthew Etzel was hot for Aberdeen, and more. With the Orioles rattling off 101 wins a season ago and hoping to continue something close to that kind of success this season, the big league club is understandably going to be the thing in the organization that gets the most attention.
The prospect is off to a torrid start with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.
Elsewhere on the farm, Dylan Beavers and Jud Fabian had multi-hit games, while Aberdeen took a bunch of walks. The Tides have some great hitters and they also have some real pitching problems, both of which are in evidence nearly on a nightly basis.
With all of the attention surrounding Jackson Holliday and his soon to be MLB debut, there is another Baltimore Orioles Top Prospect that is wielding a hot bat in Triple A and should be getting a call to the majors some time in 2024.
The Tides will not stop hitting the ball out of the ballpark. Coby Mayo and Heston Kjerstad led another impressive night for Norfolk. The Tides entered the ninth inning with the scored tied and three sluggers due up to bat.
The prospect showed off some ridiculous power on Thursday.
